Longest wait between centuries in ODI..... Guess who is at the top????
Cricket records are very interesting to know. Many unexpected players might be owning some records. Its not ends with scoring more runs, more wickets, more centuries or more hat tricks. Even batsman who spent lesser time in crease is also a records. In this thread we are going to see a weird record in One day Internationals with many surprising names. Yes, if smashing century is one kind of records, then waiting for a century is another kind. Here we are going to see players who wait for a long between one century and another century in ODI.
Keep on guessing the players. This will be a list of biggest surprise.
5. Stephen Fleming (NewZealand)
Former Kiwi player Stephen Fleming is one of the best captain in New Zealand cricket history. More than a captain, he is one of the greatest opening batsman. In the year 1998, he smashed a century of 111* against Aussie in his 81st match. But he wait around 5 years for his next century. After a gap of 111 matches, Fleming scored 134* runs against South Africa in 2002. Fleming scored this century in his 192nd match.
4. Jhonty Rhodes (South Africa)
Do you any intro for this guy?? Nope right. The flying man inside ground, Jhonty Rhodes also in this list. He never waits too many matches for a catch. But Rhodes took a gap of 123 matches between centuries in ODI. In 2001 he scored 106* against West Indies in his 93rd match. After a gap of 5 years, in 2006 Rhodes scored 126* against England in his 216th match.
3. Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka)
Surprising player of this list. Mahela Jayawardene is one of the greatest batsman in Sri Lankan cricket. Such a classy player from small island of South Asia after Arvind De Silva. We all know about his form at the middle and end of his career. But at earlier stage Jayawardene took around a gap of 132 matches for scoring centuries. In the year 1996 against Pakistan he scored 121 runs in his 85th match. But scored next century in 2002 against New Zealand. Mahela scored 107* in his 217th match.
Point to be highlighted is he scored his 1st ODI century in 1996 and scored 2nd in 2002.
2. Mohammed Azharuddin (India)
Mohammed Azharuddin, most successful captain for Team India after Kapil Dev and before Sourav Ganguly. This finest right hand batsman took a gap of 147 matches between centuries. His 3rd century 108 runs against Sri Lanka in 1990. But his 4th century 111* came true against the same Sri Lankan team in 1997.
1. Andy Flower (Zimbabwe)
Topper of this list, Andy Flower. Best wicket keeping batsman of Zimbabwe. At the end of 1990s and earlies of 2000s Zimbabwe is one of the strongest team presented many defeats to top teams in world cricket. Andy Flower belongs to that team. Remember Andy is the founder of reverse sweep. He spared every spinners especially leg spinners with his reverse sweep. He holds the record of longest gap between centuries in ODI (149 matches).
Andy totally scored only four centuries in One day International. But first two are too far. More than that he scored century in debut ODI match and scored 2nd century in his final ODI series. Really this is weird record. Both against team Sri Lanka in the years 1992(115*) and 2003(120*).
Fact is both centuries came against Sri Lanka in world cup matches.
