As like Football and Hockey world cup, International Cricket board also decided to conduct One day world cup for every four years. As per that second ODI world cup was held at the same England. Whichever teams played in 1975 world cup were continued in this world cup too. With a small change Canada came in for East Africa. As like before two groups and each group comprise 4 teams. We cant find any difference between the 1975 and 1979 world cup. Because both were played at England, both were sponsored by Prudential assurance and called as Prudential Cup, both were won by West Indies. Only difference is the finalist, in 1975 Australia lost to WI and in 1979 the hosts England lost to West Indies.
Participated Countries:
Group A: England, Pakistan, Australia and Canada
Group B: West Indies, New Zealand, India and Srilanka
From Group A England won all the 3 matches and finish as top. Pakistan won 2 matches and came as second top. While last time runner Up Australia lost against both WI and Pak. They can able to win against Canada. As expected Canada lost all the matches and finish at the bottom of that group.
From Gorup B West Indies won 2 matches and a match against Srilanka was abandoned. Newzealand won 2 matches and lost a match against West Indies. Surprisingly Srilanka beat India by 47 runs and registered their first ever world cup win. India finished at the bottom of B Group.
Semifinals:
In First Semi final England beat New Zealand by just 9 runs margin. Its a nail biting game in world cup after the 1975 world cup finals between Australia and West Indies
In other semi West Indies openers Desmond Haynes and Gordon Greenidge scored half century and a opening partnership of 100 plus runs helps WI to beat pakistan by 43 runs. Majid Khan and Zaheer Abbas scored fifties for Pakistan but other didnt support them. At end Pakistan went all out for 250 runs when chasing the target 293 runs.
Finals:
One more finals for West Indies and first ever finals for England. Last time world cup ends with a nail biting match. West Indies won the match by a small margin. But this nothing happened. It went like one sided. West Indies won comfortably by 92 runs margin with the help of Sir Viv Richards century 138 runs from 157 balls with 11 boundaries and 3 sixes. West Indies Captain Clive Llyod became the first captain to win two world cups. At that time he was the only captain to win world cup. Moreover West Indies defend the title too.
Most Runs: Gordon Greenidge (WI) with 253 runs
Most Wickets: Mike Hendrik (Eng) with 10 wickets
Interesting Moments:
Biggest Collapse
In 1975 we saw a dead slow innings of Gavaskar in Interesting moments. This year also a moment which became a black record for England, that too at finals. While chasing 287 runs target at finals, England started well. Both the openers Mike Brearly and Geoff Boycott scored half centuries 64 and 57 respectively. England legend Graham Gooch playing with 32 runs. At the time England score was 183 for 2 wickets. Gooch was bowled by Garner then everything changed in the game. England loss the last 8 wickets for just 11 runs. This is the biggest ever Collapse in the history of One day cricket.
