Some matches will create history. May be that time we wont realise it. But in future we will realise after receiving the fruit from that seed which we sowed a long back. 1983 world cup is also like that. After four years from second world cup, once again England hosts the world cup for third time. People from all over the world decided West Indies going to lift the trophy for third time. Even their form is also like that enough to win again. But no one ever imagined the end result of that tournament. As like previous tournaments this time also Eight teams played for the "Prundential Cup 1983". Out of that seven were already played both in 1975 and 1979. Zimbabwe joined in battle as a junior. Before world cup both India and Zimbabwe were played many worst matches. But surprisingly both performed well in the tournament. Only difference between previous world cups and this is, in group stage each team need to face others twice. Previously it was once.
Participated Countries:
Group A: England, Pakistan, New Zealand and Srilanka
Group B: West Indies, India, Australia and Zimbabwe
From Group A England won 5 matches out of 6 and lost only one match against New Zealand. England finishes at top of the group. Pakistan finishes second with 3 wins. Even New zealand also had 3 wins but their runrate is lesser than Pakistan which helps pak to enter semi finals. Sri lanka won only one match against New Zealand and finishes at Bottom
From Group B defending champion West Indies lost the first match itself against the amateur India. Still they won remaining games at finishes at top. Surprisingly India won 4 matches 1 against WI, 2 against Zim and 1 against Australia which made them to book semifinals spot. Stronger Australia won only two matches. Zimbabwe registered their first win in world cups. But its against the strongest Australian team. That too at first match of Group B.
Semifinals:
In First Semi final India once again played well and beat their elder sibling England. Kapil Dev's 3 wicket and Mohinder Amarnat's 2wickets helped India in restricting England for 213 runs. While chasing both Yashpal Sharma and Sandeep patil scored half centuries, then Mohinder Amarnat scored a brilliant 46 runs results India beat England by 6 wickets. Amarnat was awarded as Man of the match in 1st semi.
In second semi, West Indies completely thrashed Pakistan and proved that they are the defending champions. Pak batted first and finished with 184 runs with loss of eight wickets. Malcom Marshall, Andy Roberts combo took 5 wickets. At Chase once again Viv Richards completely stole the show with 80 runs from 96 balls. Because of him west indies won the match in 48 overs with only 2 wickets loss.
Finals:
No more England and Australia at finals, only a amateur team India. West Indies players were so excited. They want to repay the loss which they faced against India in group match. While Kapil Dev army were ready to play their first finals. As fans expected first innings went favour for West Indies. India went all out for just 183 runs.K Srikanth and Amarnat only scored decent figures of 38 and 26 runs. Roberts, Marshall and Holding trio took 7 wickets. 184 is a very small target for WI. West Indies thought that they can finish the match within 30 overs. But whatever happened in the second innings created a history in cricket. Except Richard no one batted properly. We should not say like that, Indian players performed well in bowling and fielding at the right match and in right time. West Indies went all out for 140 runs. Madhan Lal and Amarnat took 3 wickets each. The entire world completely focused their eyes on India.
The army under Kapil Dev did it. They put an end to the winning streak of West Indies. Clive Lloyd and West Indies lost the chance of winning hat trick in world cup. Mohinder Amarnat was awarded as Man of the match in both semi and finals. This win sowed the interest of playing cricket in India more than previous. Indians didnt achieve any thing in sports except Hockey before this tournament. But this win changed them to pay attention more on cricket over their national game Hockey.

Ofcourse final of this tournament is the most interesting in this world cup. But one more match at group stage was important for the entire world. Can u believe it a team was struggling with 17 runs with 5 wickets loss and ends up with 266/8 at the end??????????
Its none other than the 1983 champions, team India. Its a group match between India and Zimbabwe at Tunbridge wells. Both teams facing for second time. India batted first, they lost their both openers for duck. They lost their 5 wickets when the score was 17 runs. Then Indian skipper Kapil Dev played the best innings in One day cricket. Roger Binny, Kirmani, Madhan Lal supported. Kapil Dev built partnership with tail enders as well as scored like viv richards. Kapil Dev went not out with 175 runs from 138 balls with 16 boundaries and 6 wickets. Till today no one didnt played like that. One side saving team from losing wickets and scored a big runs too.
Unfortunately England media's announced strike on that day. So there is no chance for capturing the wonderful innings from Kapil. Its just went like only in reading and listening. That 175 runs is much greater than current days double centuries.
