Champions of 1987 world cup Australia was hosted the 1992 world cup along with their neighbour New Zealand. After winning Reliance Cup, the fifth edition of world cup was named as "Benson and Hedges World Cup" which is organised by International Cricket Council. This is the first time in cricket history players started to wear coloured jersey with their nation name at front side. Unlike test matches it looks colourful and matches played in both day and night too. Even the ball also undergone some changes it transform the colour from red to white because of day and night matches. Red ball is difficult to see at night time thats why white balls came. In this world cup group stage not there its like a method of Round robin. As per that each team has to play with every other nations. One more interesting fact is totally 9 teams played in this world cup. Its difficult to divide into two groups. If they make three groups again it will be problem in next round. Thats how Round Robin came.
2019 world cup also going to happen in the same format as like 1992 world cup. 1992 is the first ever world cup were the legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar played first. Benson and Hedges cup gave a perfect shape for One day Internationals as well as a perfect shape for Pakistan team too. Eight teams from previous tournaments played in world cup. South Africa back to cricket after the exclusion due to apartheid and joined as 9th team in this world cup.
Most importantly this is the first world cup were Duckworth Lewis method introduced. As per that if the second batting team had 44 overs available, their target score would be one greater than the 44 highest scoring overs of the team batting first. Its completely changed the history of 1992 world cup.
Participated Countries:
Round Robin
Australia, England, India, West Indies, Pakistan, South Africa, New Zealand, Srilanka and Zimbabwe.
In Round Robin stage the cohosts New Zealand performed well than other teams. They win 7 matches out of 8 and finished as top. In 1992 world cup New Zealand lost only two games and both of them against Pakistan. One at last match in league and semi finals. England finishes with 11 points with 5 wins as second. One match against pakistan was abadoned due to rain and each team got two points.
First ever perform from South Africa was more than expected in this world cup. They won 5 games and lost 2 in league round. South Africa finished as third. The main reason for them to finish at third is their bowling and fielding. Cricket world first time witnessed how fielding can change games. South Africa became the fore runner of fielding in cricket.
1992 Lucky charm was obviously Pakistan. They won only 4 games but due to the abandoned match against England they got additional one point. Which makes them to reach semifinals and even cup. Actually pakistan has suppose to loss that match. First batted pakistan went all out for just 74 runs. England chasing a much small target, they were 24/1 at 8 overs after that rain came and results in called off the match.
1987 champions Australia finished at fifth position and cant able to qualify for semi finals. Even West Indies also won only 4 games but got sixth position by a lesser net runrate. 1992 is the worst tournament for India, they won only two games one against Zimbabwe and another one against Pakistan. A match against Srilanka was called off due to rain. India also affected by rain when they played against Australia. Because of DL method they lost by 1 run. This is the second time in world cup history a match was won by 1 run difference. Both of them lost by India against Australia.
As like India, Srilanka also won only two matches. Guest appearance team Zimbabwe lost all the matches and finished at the bottom of the table.
Semifinals:
In First Semi final table topper New Zealand faced Pakistan. New Zealand batted first and scored a good target as 263 runs at the end of 50 overs. In form Martin Crowe scored 91 runs and Rutherford scored a half century. But one young man from Pakistan completely thrashed the dream of New Zealand. Imran Khan, Ramiz Raja and Javid Miandad scored 44, 44 and 57 runs respectively. But its not sufficient to reach the target. But a fatso chubby guy Inzamam Ul Haq came to crease and smashed NewZea bowlers. He scored 60 runs from just 37 balls with 7 boundaries and 1 six. Because of him Paksitan won the match at 49th over itself and made their first ever final appearance.
In Second semi finals England beat South Africa and qualified for finals as third time. First batted England scored 252 runs. But South Africa scored 232 runs before the rain at 43 overs. This is the worst ever game change in cricket history because of DL method. South Africa lost the match. We will see how it happened at the end of article under the topic Interesting moment.
Finals:
England, two times they missed the world cup at finals. This is third time they want to fulfil the dream of British people. On the other side Pakistan never imagine like they will qualify for finals at the end of first 6 matches in league round. Pakistan batted first and lost their opener Amir Sohail and Ramiz Raja for less than 10 runs. But captain Imran Khan and Javid Miandad put an excellent partnership. Both scored half century with 72 and 58 runs respectively. Once again Inzamam quick fired at death and scored 42 runs from 35 balls. Swing master Wasim Akram smashed at last 33 runs from 18 balls helped pakistan to set a decent target of 250 runs to England.
England started good with the help of legendary Graham Gooch. He gone for 29 runs after that wickets falling continuously. Fairbrother alone played a fair innings to reach 200 runs. He scored 62 runs. Lamb scored 31 runs. Other than these no one supported England. Even Pakistan bowling is also that much good at finals. Finally England went all out for 227 runs and Pakistan became the world champions of 1992.

Impossible Target due to Rain
Without any doubt the semifinal match between England and South Africa will be the best ever moment in 1992 world cup. While chasing 253 runs target, South Africa were 232 runs at the end of 43 overs with 6 wickets loss. Still they need only 21 runs from 7 overs with 4 wickets in hand. But rain played in their game. It rained the target was reset as 21 runs from 13 balls. South Africa's form looks like easy to score 21 from 13 balls. Again rain came the target was reset as 21 runs from 7 balls. It became a bit difficulty for South Africa. Third time rain came and the target was finally reset as 21 runs from 1 ball. Is that possible to score 21 runs from 1 ball???????????? South Africa sadly left the tournament. Till today they lost many matches in world cup just because of rain. The fairy tale of love between South Africa and Rain still continuing.
